Parental Downside

If you're like me, the first song you hear in the morning is indelibly imprinted on your brain for the rest of the day. Well, the past couple days, the song has been from the BBC Scotland kids' show Balamory. Great show for Duncan, he loves it. But the songs are as infectious as bird flu (or so we hear).

At least he doesn't watch Teletubbies or some such crap.

I'll never forget the disappointment of learning that our daughters didn't like Sesame Street..IMHO, all children's shows pale in comparison to that cast of Big Bird, Bert & Ernie, Guy Smiley, et, al.

BTW: Great chapter in a book called "The Tipping Point" by Malcom Gladwell on Sesame Street, Blues Clues and what learning messages and techniques "stick" with children.

Well, kids have a lot more choices in TV today than we did, I think. Most of those choices are shit, mind you, but they are there. Balamory is a great show for pre-readers, I think, but after that I think they need to move to something that teaches words and numbers, etc.

I sure hope Duncan likes Sesame Street - that show (and the Electric Company) had me reading well before I got into kindergarten.

Heh... Guy Smiley... you almost got me there.
