Get Started Being Green!

Many people would love to be green, but other than changing their incandescent light bulbs for CFL bulbs they have no idea where to begin. Well, the folks at New American Dream have an answer for you: the C3 campaign.

Each month, another challenge is suggested by the folks at New American Dream for you to try out - they've done things like getting bottled water out of your life, stop driving for one day a week, sign up to reduce your junk mail, etc.

This month the challenge is to bring your own reusable bags to the store instead of using paper or plastic bags from the store!

Great program. Click the link below to get started! It's free to join in the fun.

Excellent link - thanks! Carole and I have bought some of the reusable bags from Giant Eagle for this purpose (and of course the CFL conversion has already started).

I'll have to dig up a link for you, though - I saw Tom Friedman speak a few weeks ago and some of the things he had to say about the current "green revolution" were pretty sobering. Nothing that you'd disagree with, I don't think - but I'll dig up something for you.

Try this for starters?

I really like Friedman's stuff... he's not afraid to declare shenanigans on things and that's something that needs to be done on a regular basis in this country. Hell, in this WORLD.

I haven't read the article yet, but the current Green Revolution is great as far as raising awareness, but awful as far as actually getting people to change their ways, particularly in the area of stuff accumulation. The current revolution has us buying different stuff, not less stuff. Less stuff will help more than different stuff, without a doubt.

Are there fluorescent bulbs that work with lamps that operate on dimmer switches? One of our last two non-flourescent bulbs in the house is for a very useful dimmer lamp in the living room. When I look for fluorescents, the boxes all say "no dimmer switch use."

There are indeed. General Electric apparently puts one out - check out this link to see the name of it from their FAQ. I'm sure there are others out there too.

Don't use your normal CFLs on a dimmer switch, apparently (according to Ask Umbra at Grist.org, that can be a fire hazard. Not good.
