Two words: spiral lightbulbs.
Yeah, it's not gas, but it's conservation and there's no excuse not to use them. We've replaced all but five of the bulbs in our house with spirals, and it's made a world of difference. Of the remainder, three are on dimmer switches (spirals are bad so far on those), and two are candleabra-style 40-watters in our bathroom (haven't seen them that small yet). I even found a spotlight style for outside--100 watts of illumination, 23 watts actually used.
Get 'em.
Nice work, Dale. We've replaced a few of ours with the energy-saving bulbs, too. There's a whole list of stuff you can do to lessen the amount of energy you use outside of gasoline.
The Sierra Club has a section called "The Green Life" on their website that talks about this kind of stuff... and Grist.org has Ask Umbra that answers questions about how to save energy and live a more conservation-minded lifestyle.

Actually, a sin tax on gas would drive its cost up, and energize alternative fuels (e.g. body fat).
Agreed, Histor. A sin tax combined with increased CAFE standards would go a long way to stop the use of petroleum as a fuel, which would go a long way to changing a lot of things for the better.
